Finding and Using Moving Images In Context

Northeast Historic Film NEH Digital Startup project

About

Between 1928 and 1936, Charles Gilbert and Joseph Swan shot 16mm film in China. The image of the swordsman is from the Joan Branch Collection donated to Northeast Historic Film by Joan Swan Branch, daughter of Joseph Swan. She grew up in Shanghai and appears in the film to be digitized in this project.

Northeast Historic Film is working with partners Primary Source and Asia Source, Maine Memory Network, MIC (Moving Image Collections), and Windows on Maine to provide access to digital moving images of China.

This project is funded by a 2007 NEH Digital Humanities Start-Up grant, and will run October 2007-September 2008.

Our goal is to balance online footage availability with search tools, scholarship and usability.

This is the initial plan of work, workplan.pdf
We’ll be refining it as we go, in sync with our associated project, “Moving Image Review Online.”
